ABOUT 

Langa's House has compiled a list of publications that are open to poetry, fiction, nonfiction and essay submissions. This is a great resource if you are a writer looking to possibly get published. Some of these are paid and others are unpaid. While there is a brief outline of each opportunity, please try to look at each website (links provided) to know their full specifications.

The universities of Cape Town, Pretoria, Stellenbosch, Western Cape and the Witwatersrand have recently been awarded a grant from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation for a Programme in African Digital Humanities. The Programme will offer R3 million annually over five years in support of projects of digitisation, course design and research. The programme invites one-page preliminary proposal descriptions from researchers and curators associated with any of the South African universities.

 

They encourage anyone interested to write to the programme coordinators: Professor Keith Breckenridge at keith.breckenridge@wits.ac.za, and Professor Hlonipha Mokoena at hlonipha.mokoena@wits.ac.za.

At LH, we are looking for submissions of short stories, poems or articles that push your readers' thinking. For fiction and articles please ensure it falls between 500 and 3,000 words. We prefer a more casual tone with an overall social message.

 

Please submit the following:

  • Short bio + your social media/blog/website links

  • A good  MP3 recording or a video of your poem + the script (poems only)

  • Your picture (optional)- of good quality/high resolution ​

  • If you have a visual you want to add, you can send it but please be careful of copyright issues​

Previously Published: On exception. Please mention where and where it was originally published (wait 3 months after publication before submitting unless Publisher stipulates a longer wait date)

The Sun is a reader-supported ad-free magazine. They have been described in many ways: celebratory, fierce, unflinching, thoughtful, truthful, dark, darkly funny, tender. It has been said their contributors say that after their work reaches more than 70,000 engaged Sun readers, they often hear from old friends and new admirers. They also have a section called Reader's Write which has different specifications than those listed below

  • Paid: $300 to $2,000 for nonfiction and fiction and $100 to $250 for poetry. They purchase one-time rights. All other rights revert to the author upon publication.

Glimmer Train tries to set the bar for treating writers with respect and continues - after 28 years - to actively champion emerging writers. (Fully half of the coming year, their submissions will be open only to emerging writers.) In the past seven years, over 80% of the 1st place stories in their Short Story Award for New Writers were their authors’ first print publications!

Note: It is not easy to get accepted by them, read this for tips on how to get published as advised by the publishers themselves.

  • Paid: $700, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, and 10 copies of that issue.

If you write literary works with an African taste, then this one is for you. They are looking for fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, book reviews, essays, literary commentaries, fun listicles, and any writing with a literary bent. Always include a short bio and photograph of yourself. Feel free to make the photograph as playful or as formal as you like.
