2018 International Essay Contest for Young People

Deadline: 15 June 2018

This annual essay contest is organized in an effort to harness the energy, creativity and initiative of the world's youth aged 25 or younger in promoting a culture of peace and sustainable development. It also aims to inspire society to learn from the young minds and to think about how each of us can make a difference in the world. This program is an activity within the framework of the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Essays must be 700 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese, excluding essay title and cover page. Essays may be typed or printed. 

 

Contestants should write on the topic: “The Change I Want to Make”

What is the one thing you would like to change the most to make your school, workplace, community, country or the world a better place? How would you bring about that change?
Please share your concrete ideas.

Presented by Lee & Low Books, an award-winning children’s book publisher, this award is given for a previously unpublished children’s picture book manuscript (of no more than 1,500 words) written by a writer of colour who are residents of the United States, 18 years or older at the time of entry, and who have not previously had a children’s picture book published. You may submit up to 2 manuscripts. 

Prize: 

  • $2,000 cash

  • A standard publication contract,  including their basic advance and royalties for a first-time author.

  • An Honor Award winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000

The University of Pittsburgh Press is looking for previously published writers to submit a collection of short stories. Digital-only publication and self-publication do not count toward this requirement, and your works should have been published by a reputable publisher. Winners will be notified between December 2018 and January 2019.

The 2018 Dinaane Debut Fiction Award

Deadline: 30 June 2018

The 2018 Dinaane Debut Fiction Award, administered by the Jacana Literary Fund is now open to submissions from first-time writers from SADC country. The awards previous winner is longlisted for this year’s Barry Ronge Fiction Prize. This award was previously known as the European Union Literary Award and has run for about 14 years now.

 

Eligible Countries: South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe

 

Prizes: The winner stands to get:

New writers of science fiction and fantasy stand now stand a chance to be adjudicated by professionals in the field in a bid to win the L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future Contest. This competition runs on a quarterly basis, with the June deadline set for the 3rd quarter of the competition. L. Ron Hubbard has been known to lobby for new writers to find a space in the world for their art to not just be seen but also acknowledged.
